The baobab is a tree known for its splendour and the breathtaking scenery it offers to photographers. But it also produces a fruit that, when ground into a powder, is an exceptional food supplement. Here is what you should know about baobab powder!
What is baobab powder?
The baobab is a tree that belongs to the Bombacaceae family, and more specifically to the Adansonia genus. Depending on the classification used, this tree also belongs to the Malvaceae family. It should be noted that there are in fact eight varieties, adapted to the most arid climatic conditions. Its trees are found in the African savannah, where it is also called the 'magic tree' or 'bottle tree'. It produces a fruit, the akoussa, which is also known as 'monkey bread'. It is this fruit that is mainly used to produce baobab powder, an unusual food supplement.
The composition of this powder
What makes the baobab fruit so unique is its composition. It is one of the richest in vitamin C of the world. Its pulp contains 300 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams, which is seven times more than in an orange. An exceptional score! On the other hand, a number of other nutrients are also present in the akoussa powder, such as vitamins (A, PP, B1 and B6) and essential minerals and trace elements: potassium, phosphorus, zinc and iron.
The dietary fibre content of this fruit is also impressive. Finally, it also contains proteins (including several essential amino acids), flavonoids, polyphenols and phenolic acids. These active ingredients are responsible for the properties and benefits of baobab powder.
Properties and benefits of baobab powder
The list of benefits of baobab powder is very long. And for good reason. This is one of the most amazing foods in the world!
Considerable anti-inflammatory properties
Inflammations cause discomfort, sometimes very serious, such as pain, stiffness or swelling. Natural anti-inflammatory solutions, such as baobab powder, can be used to combat their effects. This product helps to relieve symptoms related to inflammation and inflammatory diseases (arthritis, osteoarthritis) (1). This natural anti-inflammatory acts on swelling, stiffness and pain, significantly reducing them. People who suffer regularly from these conditions can find a sustainable, effective and natural solution to improve their quality of life. Baobab powder can also be combined with other natural anti-inflammatory foods and supplements.
A naturally antioxidant food
As we have already mentioned, baobab powder contains vitamins and antioxidant molecules. These include polyphenols and flavonoids. These chemical elements naturally present in plants help to prevent and fight against damage caused by excess free radicals in the body. Since free radicals accelerate cell ageing and promote the development of certain diseases (cardiovascular pathologies, cancers) (2).
On the other hand, baobab powder is an important source of vitamin C. This vitamin is a natural antioxidant. It therefore reinforces the effect of flavonoids and polyphenols on the cells and their accentuated ageing. These antioxidant powers have other benefits: they preserve the skin cells, moisturise the epidermis... In short, baobab powder softens and soothes dry or damaged skin. Especially since this same powder also has healing properties!
