This remarkable oil has a great affinity with the skin and scalp, and is appreciated for its fluidity and cosmetic properties. Jojoba oil has a place of choice in many skincare and make-up products. Discover all its benefits.
It's called jojoba oil, but it's actually a liquid wax, obtained by pressing the seeds of a shrub found in the deserts of Arizona, California and South America. Rich in active ingredients, it was first used as an excipient in cosmetic formulas, thanks to its fluidity and non-greasy feel. In particular, it replaced whalebone when sperm whaling was banned.
"Very effective, easily assimilated and well tolerated, it does not contain the same fatty acids as a traditional oil", explains Fabienne Millet, pharmacist and specialist in phytotherapy. It's a stable formula that doesn't oxidise and protects against free radicals. Nourishing and moisturising, it reinforces the hydrolipidic film of the skin and hair, with a beneficial effect on oily skin. It is also recognised for its anti-ageingSmoothing and plumping.
Creamy and protective
It is also used to give a creamy texture to foundations In mascaras, jojoba wax coats the eyelashes, giving them greater volume and promoting their growth. "In mascaras, jojoba wax coats the lashes, giving them more volume and encouraging their growth. What's more, it offsets the drying effect of certain ingredients," adds Fabienne Millet.
A natural anti-ageing agent
For the epidermis, jojoba oil maintains a good level of hydration and prevents dehydration, one of the primary factors in skin ageing. It provides lipids that are essential for maintaining a good hydrolipidic film. It also protects hydration factors (NMFs), the little sponges that retain water in the epidermis. "In the dermis, its anti-inflammatory action limits attacks on collagen and elastin fibres while stimulating their synthesis. It also strengthens the 'cement' between cells, redensifying dermal tissue and reducing wrinkles," adds Fabienne Millet. AntioxidantJojoba wax also strengthens cell defences against free radicals. A healing agent, it facilitates skin repair, with action on stretch marks and babies' diaper rash. Very gentle, it can be used by everyone, with no risk of allergic reaction.
An ally for oily skin
It is one of the few plant substances with recognised sebum-regulating activity. The structure of jojoba oil is very similar to that of sebum, giving it a perfect affinity with the skin and hair. As a result, it mixes easily with these oily secretions, liquefying them and facilitating their elimination. This limits the development of bacteria, and therefore the risk of pimples. To reinforce its action on oily skin, you can mix it with a purifying essential oil such as geranium, tea-tree or lavender, with which it is very effective. Another virtue of jojoba oil is its antifungal action: it limits the proliferation of mycosis (fungus).
